📚 About the Book
Maya, Kendra, and Destiny thought their day off from school would be all fun and freedom—until a dusty little bookstore pulled them into an adventure they never could’ve imagined.
One touch of an ancient book sends them tumbling through time, landing in some of the most powerful and unforgettable moments of Black history:
standing with Claudette Colvin as she refuses to give up her seat,
calculating alongside NASA’s Hidden Figures as rockets blaze toward the sky,
walking the busy streets of Greenwood’s Black Wall Street before its fall,
feeling the rhythm of Motown as music reshapes the world.
Each leap is more breathtaking than the last—teaching courage, resilience, and pride. But history doesn’t give without taking. With every step, the girls learn the past has power… and it might change their future forever.
Black Girls Day Off celebrates friendship, honors Black history, and reminds every reader—especially Black girls—that their story, power, and voice matter. Perfect for fans of Hidden Figures and The Sun Is Also a Star.
“Sometimes, stepping into the past is the bravest way to show up for your future.”

🖋️ Author’s Note
When I began writing Black Girls Day Off, I wanted to give Black girls a story that felt like a celebration—of friendship, of curiosity, of joy. Too often, we’re taught history as a list of dates and names, not as the lives and dreams of people who looked like us, who dared, created, resisted, and loved.
Maya, Kendra, and Destiny were born from that desire—to remind young readers that you belong in every chapter of history. You are the story, the dream, and the legacy continuing to unfold.
Whether you’re taking a day off to breathe, to learn, or to dream a little bigger, I hope this book makes you proud of where you come from and excited for where you’re going.
With love and gratitude,
Leah T. Williams
