What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
A free 30-day program designed to help middle grade readers build a daily reading habit over the summer — without the pressure of school, assigned books, or grades.
Your child picks their own book. They read 10–20 minutes a day. And each day they get a short reading prompt and a simple writing activity to go along with it.
New content unlocks daily during Week 1 then every Wednesday after that — so it never feels overwhelming.
The challenge starts July 1. Everything they need is right here.
What's Included:
✅ 30 days of daily reading and writing prompts
✅ Weekly reflection journals — printable and free
✅ A curated book list featuring Black and Caribbean authors
✅ A free resource guide for finding books through your library at no cost
✅ Daily content that unlocks automatically — no overwhelm, no pressure
Who Is This For?
This challenge is for parents of middle grade readers — roughly ages 8 and up — who want their child to read more this summer but don't want to force it.
It is especially designed for kids who say they don't like reading. The right book and the right prompt can change that. This challenge is built to find both.
Your child doesn't have to be a strong reader to start. They just have to be willing to try.
About
Hi — I'm Leah T. Williams. I'm an English teacher, a college professor, and the author of several books featuring Caribbean and Black characters.
I built this challenge because I believe every child deserves to see themselves as a reader — and because the summer is the most important time to protect the reading habit before the school year begins.
This challenge is completely free because literacy should be accessible to everyone.
I hope it changes something for your child this summer. 📚
