Good books don't exist in a vacuum. They are connected to the real world — to history, to culture, to things happening right now. Sometimes that connection is obvious. Sometimes it is buried deep in the story's DNA.

As you read today ask yourself what your book is really about underneath the plot. What bigger idea is the author exploring?

Reading Prompt:
Read 10–20 minutes. Think about what your book would be about if you had to explain it to someone without describing the plot.

Writing Prompt:
Write a paragraph answering this question — what is your book really about? Not what happens. What does it mean? What idea is the author exploring through the story?
