Day 2: Step Into the Story

Welcome back! 📚

You opened the book. You came back. That's the habit forming right there.

Today we're going to pay attention to something writers spend a lot of time building — the setting. Setting is where and when your story takes place. It's not just a backdrop — it's part of what makes a story feel real.

Setting can be:

A real place — like New York City, rural Mississippi, the islands of the Caribbean, or a small town in Texas
A fictional place — like a magical school, a dystopian city, an enchanted forest, or a kingdom that doesn't exist on any map
A mix of both — a real city with fictional rules, or a familiar neighborhood where something extraordinary is happening

As you read today, notice where your story is set. What details does the author give you? What does it look, sound, smell, or feel like?

Today's Reading Prompt: Read for 10–20 minutes. As you read, pay close attention to how the author describes the world of the story. What details stand out to you?

Today's Writing Prompt: Write 2–3 sentences describing where your story takes place. Pretend you are writing a postcard from inside your book to a friend who has never been there. What would you tell them about this place?

Tip for parents — read your child's postcard and ask one follow up question about it. That conversation counts as literacy too.
